INFORMATION
For All Of Our Visitors:
The first thing we strongly suggest for anyone starting homeschool is to find out what the requirements are, if any, in their home state. There are several ways to do that without contacting a school or state office. One is to look at
the Home
School Legal Defense Association
website which lists the requirements for every state, or you can review the book
"REAL HOME SCHOOL" by Kathy Banks. Included is a list of all the state requirements for
homeschoolers, as well as incredibly useful homeschool
suggestions. In addition, it also also includes some expertly written scheduling advice.
Written by 39 of the world's best educational experts, "THE HOMESCHOOLING BOOK OF
ANSWERS", published by Linda Dobson, is a wonderful information book. In this book, some of the world's most respected scholars answer 88 of the most important questions that parents can have. Whether currently
homeschooling, or still considering it, it answers questions such as: "Is homeschooling right for my child?", "How can I teach subjects that I don't understand myself, such as algebra?", and "Can I really afford to
homeschool?" Here, at last, are honest answers to all your questions!
Kathryn Stout's "DESIGN-A-STUDY"
guide books and audio tape series provides information about catering to your children's needs. In one of the books,
"TEACHING TIPS AND
TECHNIQUES" she gives examples of what is expected of each age group. Especially important is the chapter on how to overcome reading or writing difficulties. The greatest aspect of the book is the section which explains learning styles. Every child has a unique learning style, and this book will help you to discover your
childrens' preferred learning method.
There are several different ways to homeschool. One popular way of homeschooling is
through unit studies, and many children love this type of learning. Several of
Kathryn's books can be used as unit studies, such as "THE
MAYA", "MOVIES
AS LITERATURE", "GUIDES
TO HISTORY PLUS", and "SCIENCE
SCOPE". Another example of a unit study would be studying a specific subject such as 'Outer Space'. There are numerous unit study resources available online and in bookstores. For example, your student could read about the moon, calculate his weight on the moon compared to his weight on the earth, and write an outlined book report about the moon landing. This particular unit study would cover science, math,
english, and history!
Another popular way of homeschooling is through prewritten curricula.
ALPHA OMEGA's LIFEPAC books provide written lessons for all levels. The teacher's guide includes extracurricular activities you can use to enhance your
childrens' learning, such as book reports or science projects. Our children especially like
