NATURAL SPELLER   -   $22  $17.60
Absolutely the only book you will ever need to teach spelling. Teaching strategies include additional tips for use with the learning disabled, and word lists are organized by both sight and sound patterns. Build vocabulary skills with Latin and Greek roots and word lists, and by using the spelling rules to add prefixes and suffixes to root words. Choose from among the suggested activities to include practice with grammar, dictionary, and composition skills. Phonic, spelling, and punctuation rules are listed for easy reference. Word lists are divided by grade, 1 through 8. However, this method is easily adapted for older students or adults who need remedial work. Because of its multi-sensory and simplified approach to spelling, and because each child can work at his own pace, this program is ideal for students with learning disabilities. Placed second in the 1999 Practical Homeschooling Reader Awards.
  • Allow students to progress at their own rate.

  • Choose activities for word practice to suit each student's needs.

  • Build skills: phonic charts, spelling and writing rules are at your fingertips.

  • Use Latin and Greek roots and word lists to build vocabulary necessary for college entrance exams.

IF your students only remember word lists long enough to pass weekly tests, but not long enough to spell correctly when writing papers, replace random memorization with this logical approach.

  • Words are already organized by both sight and sound patterns.

  • Each graded list includes prefixes and suffixes to be added to words in order to practice with rules regularly.

  • Tips include additional activities to help with long-term memory.

Educator and consultant Kathryn Stout created the
Natural Speller

  1. To teach poor spellers how to become natural spellers.

  2. To provide teachers and tutors with a handy resource to fill in gaps, teach students how to approach a word, and help students progress at their own rate.

  3. To give homeschool families an inexpensive, flexible, and effective spelling curriculum.

     From the Introduction:
© 1989 Kathryn Stout, all rights reserved

The whole point of becoming good at spelling is to write and write and write some more without having to stop and check the dictionary every few minutes. Those "natural" spellers have managed to do, without thinking, what anyone can learn. They have realized that our words have patterns and rules that can be used to figure out a new word.

Anyone struggling with spelling has probably been trying to memorize every word letter by letter. Not only are the words likely to be forgotten within a few weeks, but the entire dictionary would have to be memorized to be sure you could spell a word! So--what can you do to turn a poor speller, or just an average speller, into a "natural" speller?

With Natural Speller you can use the units provided, choosing words or even adding your own. Or you can use the charts and rules to help you organize your own word lists according to a pattern that the child can both see and hear.

COMPREHENSIVE COMPOSITION  -  $14  $11.20
Just one volume covers grades K-12. The outlined teaching strategy encourages better writing through editing, allowing students to develop at their own pace, improving with each practice. Boredom is eliminated by choosing the type of composition and an appealing topic from among those suggested to suit the student's needs and interests. Topics include: paragraphs, essays, reports, outlines, biographies, narratives, letters, and short stories; persuasive, descriptive, expository and creative writing; choosing and narrowing a topic; content and structure skills; mechanics; and sample lessons. Use alone (it has everything you need) or as a reference. Recommended by reviewer Cathy Duffy as "one of the most concise yet comprehensive books for teaching the writing process available to home educators."

Do you sometimes think that there just aren't enough hours in the school day to cover everything? One way to accomplish more is to teach skills in several areas at one time. "But won't that be confusing?" you ask. It doesn't have to be.

Composition topics can be chosen from studies in history, literature, and/or science. While the students are digging up facts on an ancient civilization, instead of interrupting with an unrelated textbook writing assignment, choose the type of writing you want them to learn and relate it to their research. After reading a story out loud, follow up with a discussion and ask them to write a book review. Instead of simply reading a science text, let them choose a topic, find the information, and write a short report. While the students are busy thinking about what to write, you can show them how.

Topics are included in this guide. However, information is arranged to allow flexibility. Students can create stories for their own enjoyment, use topics simply because they are appealing, or relate composition assignments to valuable content in other subjects.

Once a student has developed skill in writing various types of paragraphs and short compositions, he may be able to go on to reports, news stories, biographies, and short stories on his own. While you teach the little ones, let the more experienced writer check the proper section in this guide and simply follow the instructions.

Writing skills are necessary for more than the college bound. Writing clear directions can prevent a friend from getting lost. A well-written letter to a newspaper or congressman could change an opinion. A well-prepared presentation can bring insight at a church meeting or on the job. We owe it to students to help them express their ideas thoughtfully and concisely so that they can be a positive influence in the future.

CRITICAL CONDITIONING   -   $12  $9.60
Now you can see all of the components of reading comprehension covered from grades K-8, along with definitions, explanations, and activity ideas. Teaching suggestions include ways of incorporating analysis and thinking skills while covering comprehension objectives. Topics include elements and types of literature, reference skills, SQRRR study skills, propaganda techniques, discussion questions, and more. This is an area too easily forgotten when library books are used for your reading program. For anyone using readers, this will help eliminate the busy work.

Children must be trained (conditioned) to think critically. This guide helps parents, tutors, and teachers incorporate thinking skills into every aspect of comprehension.

  • Read aloud to young children using an approach that directs their thinking, conditioning them to eventually read this way on their own
  • Teach older children to use this method in order to read for insight.
  • Develop language skills that enhance the ability to think beyond the literal level.
  • Provide insights that help children learn to analyze fiction and nonfiction.
  • Do all of the above while meeting standard reading comprehension objectives.

Science:

SCIENCE SCOPE   -   $15  $12
Concepts and skills taught in grades K-12 are arranged for easy teaching multi-levels or to allow a child to progress as far as he is able in any area of science. Teach the scientific process. Use a variety of fun and interesting resources without fear of leaving educational gaps. Teaching strategies include tips to help children think scientifically and get the most out of their explorations and experiences. A checklist allows convenient record keeping. Students in grades 6-12 can use it as a working outline to find information on their own.

Science Scope provides lists of skills, topics, and concepts that are part of most science curricula.

It can be used:

As a checklist.

This allows the student to use a wide variety of materials to learn about science instead of a program designed by only one company for use in kindergarten through high school.

Teachers and parents can also be sure a depth of understanding is achieved, rather than simply exposure to a topic. Older students can use this book to help them recognize what they should understand and retain (checking off items themselves) whether using a text book or several books and resources.

As an overview of the progression of a topic from simple concepts to the more complicated.

Even if a topic is not introduced until a student is eleven or twelve, for example, it may be helpful to introduce it using ideas from the easier level. This guide includes material used in high school courses for the college-bound student, which may prove too complex for some students. In that case, teachers and parents have the option of taking the student as far as he is able in any topic, while making certain that basic concepts are understood.

As a reference for age-level expectations.

Find out how much can be expected at any age. Keep children challenged, but not beyond their ability to meet that challenge. Topics are divided according to the following key:

Primary
Intermediate
Junior High
High School
Ages 4 - 8
Ages 9 - 11
Ages 12 - 14
Ages 15 - 18
Grades Pre K - 3
Grades 4 - 6
Grades 7 - 8
Grades 9 - 12

The age ranges are provided as a guide, not as a requirement for completing, or even introducing, topics at that age.

FAQ: Is Science Scope a complete science curriculum for K-12?

No. That would be impossible in one volume. Rather, this book allows the teacher to learn how to teach science effectively, become familiar with basic concepts, and use the thorough list of graded objectives to be covered in grades K-12 as a guide to lesson planning and for simplified record-keeping. Because the teacher now has a detailed overview of each area of science, the actual content used by the child to learn the subject can be chosen according to the student's learning style. Library books, hands-on kits, videos, games, software, and the Internet are all possible resources to complete required standards rather than extras "if time allows."
