INFORMATION

The first thing we strongly suggest for anyone starting homeschool is for them to find out what the requirements are, if any, in their home state. There are several ways to do that without contacting a school or state office. One is to look at
the Home
School Legal Defense Association
website which lists the requirements for every state, or you can review the book
"REAL HOME SCHOOL" by Kathy Banks. Included is a list of all the state requirements for
homeschoolers, as well as incredibly useful homeschool
suggestions. In addition, it also also includes some expertly written scheduling advice.
Written by 39 of the world's best educational experts, "THE HOMESCHOOLING BOOK OF
ANSWERS", published by Linda Dobson, is a wonderful information book. In this book, some of the world's most respected scholars answer 88 of the most important questions that parents can have. Whether currently
homeschooling, or still considering it, it answers questions such as: "Is homeschooling right for my child?", "How can I teach subjects that I don't understand myself, such as algebra?", and "Can I really afford to
homeschool?" Here, at last, are honest answers to all your questions!
Kathryn Stout's "DESIGN-A-STUDY" series provides information about catering to your children's needs. In one of the books,
"TEACHING TIPS AND
TECHNIQUES" she gives examples of what is expected of each age group. Especially important is the chapter on how to overcome reading or writing difficulties. The greatest aspect of the book is the section which explains learning styles. Every child has a unique learning style, and this book will help you to discover your
childrens' preferred learning method.
There are several different ways to homeschool. The most popular way is through prewritten curricula.
ALPHA OMEGA's LIFEPAC books provide written lessons for all levels. The teacher's guide includes extracurricular activities you can use to enhance your
childrens' learning, such as book reports or science projects. Our children especially like
AO's SWITCHED-ON
SCHOOLHOUSE, since it is computerized, which lets them see their grades immediately. We have tried various other curricula in the past, but our children have always preferred
ALPHA OMEGA.
Another popular way of homeschooling is unit studies. Many children love this type of learning. An example of a unit study would be studying a specific subject such as 'Outer Space'. There are numerous unit study resources available online and in bookstores. For example, your student could read about the moon, calculate his weight on the moon compared to his weight on the earth, and write an outlined book report about the moon landing. This particular unit study would cover science, math,
english, and history!
For high school students, especially juniors and seniors, we highly recommend
"ACCELERATED DISTANCE

-Nearly A Million
Kids Homeschooled-
(MCNS) -- A US government study released
by the Education Department estimates that about 850,000 of the nations 50
million children are being taught at home rather than in schools, mostly by
parents who are well-educated and live in or near cities.
"The number of parents taking direct responsibility for teaching their
children through homeschooling is approaching a million, and we expect the
next report on homeschooling will reflect growth in the population and new
homeschooling opportunities," said Education Secretary Rod Paige.
The new figures come from an Education Department telephone survey of 57,278
households conducted from January through May 1999.
The report also gives a clearer picture of the average homeschooler. The study
found that they are more likely than other students to live with two or more
siblings in a two-parent family, with only one parent working outside the
home.
Parents of homeschoolers are, on average, better-educated than other parents
a greater percentage have college degrees though their income is about
the same. Like most parents, the vast majority of those who homeschool their
children earn less than $50,000, and many earn less than $25,000.
"These are families that have one income, and have sacrificed to live on
one income," Laura Derrick, president of the Home Education Network, told
the Associate Press.
